My snorkeling group is wondering, has anyone snorkeled the west coast of British Columbia, Gulf Islands or San Juan Islands Washington? We know these areas would not be considered “tropical”. Can anyone recommend specific sites in any of these areas?
Thank you.
Hi Colleen, we know that folks do snorkel that area, so hopefully you will get some helpful answers. We do have a question with some answers regarding snorkeling farther south in Puget Sound.
Not the coast of British Columbia, but we snorkeled the Campbell River (drift/current snorkel) when the salmon were spawning and it was a lot of fun. The current is taking you downstream as the salmon are spawning upstream…very cool.
I have snorkeled a lot in British Columbia, particularly around Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. In fact, I wrote a book about it! It’s called “Snorkeling Adventures Around Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands: The Ultimate Guide” and you can find it on Amazon. There are ~50 locations described in the book. You can also check out the FaceBook group “snorkelers of BC” for more inspiration.
Wow, Sara, that looks to be a great book! For anyone interested, here is a link to Sara’s book on Amazon. You can help us if you use this link. We may make a small commission, at no extra cost to you.
Wow, this is fantastic! Just ordered your book, Sara – through Galen and Nicole’s link here (I love a win-win-win situation ;)) – so happy to learn of it.
I live in Seattle and just got my first cold-water wetsuit for adventures closer to home than Roatán (my fave winter snorkeling spot). It’s so gorgeous in the Pacific Northwest in summer that I don’t ever want to miss even a part of it (we do wait ALL YEAR for it, after all) but since I also miss snorkeling, it’ll be fabulous to have this guide to local (well, regional, anyway;) waters. Thank you all!
