I wanted to provide some information about how we snorkel Ambergris Caye Belize. We have been to Belize many times. We prefer Ambergris Caye.
We LOVE being independent and not having to hire a boat to take us to the reef for snorkeling. So, we have found a great place to stay and use a kayak to snorkel to one of the best reefs in the world. We stay at Belizean Shores (they have kitchens) or if you want more expensive and fancier, next door is Cocoa Beach Resort. Kayaks are complimentary.
We each get our own kayak (we are reasonably fit 60+ year olds) and kayak out to one of the nearby buoys, tie up and jump in the water. We have seen most every kind of fish, Nurse Sharks, Spotted Eagle Rays and an abundance of coral. We are always alone and we have the entire reef to ourselves. Crystal clear water and HEAVEN on earth.
We even have kayaked out from Portofino Resort to Mexico Rocks, which is great, as well.
We never hire a boat, nor take a tour. Although, on our first trip we did the usual tours.
I will mention that if you don’t like to kayak or can’t get in the kayak from the water, this might not be for you. I will admit, that with getting a bit older and a bit heavier, it can be challenging to crawl back into the kayak from the ocean! Not a pretty sight!
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us!

Hello Lee, thanks for sharing your take on snorkeling from Ambergris Caye in Belize. That sounds like a good way to do it especially if you don’t want to deal with group tours.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. I really don’t handle boats well and the idea of kayaking is perfect. We both are 60 year olds as well so if you can do it so can we!
