Has Anyone Been Snorkeling at Turneffe Island Belize?

By David Gottlieb – (Atlanta)
I am thinking of trying Turneffe Island Resort, Belize for snorkeling. I have been to Glover’s Reef twice and loved it. I am wondering if anyone out there has recently been to this resort for a snorkeling trip. I would be going probably February or March.

Any help would be appreciated.

We stayed a week at Turneffe Island Resort in 2013 and loved it.

The reefs were very healthy, close by (10 minutes by boat), shallow and teeming with life. We snorkeled 2-3 times per day (and once at night), and never the same place twice. We came across two dolphins, octopus, rays, Hawksbill Sea Turtles, and just missed a manatee. Our guide caught destructive lionfish and fed it to the American Crocodiles that live in the mangroves (away from the reefs and the resort).

We did the day trip to snorkel the Blue Hole, and preferred snorkeling at Lighthouse Reef Atoll (where you picnic on the way back).

We haven’t been to Glover’s Reef, but for us Turneffe came a close third after Fiji and Hawaii.

It’s a quiet resort with not much else to do but snorkel, dive, fish, or relax.

Hope this helps!

Jan – Sep 21, 2017 – Snorkelers Treated Well

I have been to Turneffe Island Resort several times and although I have only been diving, I will add that snorkelers are very well treated at the resort. You will not be expected to snorkel at the same location as the divers – they will take you separately to better spots for snorkelers.

We were there in 2013. The staff treated us extremely well and the food was quite good.

Be aware you are out in the ocean some way so trips to the mainland don’t happen. Bring plenty of entertainment and books as there is not a great deal to do when you’re not out on the water.

There were only 12 guests when we were there, evenly split between divers and snorkelers. The divers caught lionfish which the staff made into ceviche.

All snorkels are by small boat except for the Blue Hole trip where you go with the divers on a larger boat.

We went out 2-3 times a day and saw a great variety of fish and coral.

Our trip partner is offering an organized group snorkeling trip to Turneffe Island Resort. Looks like they visit some very healthy reefs by small boat daily.

Marc – Nov 10, 2021 – Turneffe Island Resort May 2021

We were there for one week and visited 11 sites with our snorkeling guide. Four sites were in excellent condition with a healthy mix of hard and soft corals and sponges and a good mix of fishes. The remaining seven sites were less interesting, either few fishes, the site was too small, or there was little marine life in general.

It appears that there is commercial fishing activities in the area even though it is officially a marine preserve…

Lighthouse Reef Atoll was disappointing, Blue Hole has little marine life as well as Half Moon Caye and Long Caye.

The resort is of course very comfortable.
