We recommend snorkeling Navini Island in Fiji. Navini Island Resort is located off the northwest coast of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu, within the protected barrier reef system.
One of Navini’s biggest advantages is how easy it is to reach. It is approximately 45 minutes by boat from Nadi International Airport. It requires no domestic flights or long overland transfers to reach. It is sheltered inside the barrier reef, which helps moderate conditions.
For international snorkelers, this combination of accessibility and reef quality is rare.

Reef History and Restoration
A major cyclone in 2016 caused severe damage to Navini’s surrounding reef, essentially clearing large sections of coral.
What followed is what makes Navini stand out. The resort immediately began experimenting with coral restoration. Early attempts had mixed results. By 2019, they identified methods that worked specifically for their location. During COVID closures, when guests were absent, staff spent their days in the water planting coral.
By September 2025, the payoff is clear. We saw healthy, vibrant coral growth, strong structural diversity, and dense and active fish populations.
The reef is fully protected from fishing, and it shows. This is not a lightly recovered reef. It is a reef that has been intentionally rebuilt and carefully protected.

Our Experience Snorkeling Navini Island
Navini is a snorkeling-first destination. There is no dive operation, which is actually a major benefit for snorkelers.
Key highlights:
- A true house reef that could easily fill an entire week
- The island always has a snorkelable side
- When conditions are rough on one side, the opposite side is calm
- Every section of the island offers something different, whether coral structure, fish density, or terrain
You can snorkel whenever you want, for as long as you want, without depending on schedules.

Boat Snorkeling Operations
While the house reef alone is excellent, boat trips add meaningful variety to snorkeling Navini Island.
Our group of eight dedicated snorkelers was the first group the resort had hosted that traveled specifically to snorkel for hours each day. After the first day, the staff quickly understood exactly what we were looking for and adjusted accordingly.
What stood out about the boat snorkeling operations was that they arranged daily extended boat trips. Most outings were just our group, making flexibility easy. And, staff were always present, attentive, and proactive about making things happen.
Once they understood our interests, they consistently delivered.
Marine Life Observations
Expectations about the marine life we would see while snorkeling Navini Island were modest. The reality was a very pleasant surprise.
Instead of sparse reef life, we found teeming schools of fish, excellent species diversity, and active reef behavior throughout the day. Two first-time sightings for us were Atoll Butterflyfish and Reticulated Butterflyfish. These were especially notable given prior snorkeling in Fiji, Raja Ampat, Belize, Hawaii, and the Great Barrier Reef.

The following list reflects species that were easily identifiable during our stay and is not intended to be exhaustive.
- Angelfish – Regal, Semicircle (juvenile)
- Boxfish – Yellow

- Coral Bream – Bridled Monocle
- Damselfish – Blue-Green, Indo-Pacific Sergeant, Jewel, Scissortail Sergeant, Three-Spot Dascyllus
- Anemonefish – Fiji, Orangefin, Pink
- Chromis – Black-Axil, Blackbar, Blue-Green
- Dartfish – Two-Tone, Small-Spotted
- Eel – Giant Moray
- Filefish – Longnose (never saw less than 4-6 in a school)
- Fusiliers – Blue, Yellow

Resort Experience Beyond the Snorkeling
The overall resort experience supported the snorkeling exceptionally well. The food selections were consistently good, with enough variety to stay satisfied over a longer stay. The staff were always present, attentive, and genuinely engaged in helping guests get the most out of their time. They offered cultural events, both in the evenings and occasionally during the day, that were well done and inclusive rather than performative.
These elements added depth to the stay without distracting from the primary focus on the water.
Who Navini Is Best Suited For
Navini Island Resort is an excellent fit for:
- Serious snorkelers who prioritize reef quality and water time
- Small groups who value flexibility and personal attention
- Travelers interested in conservation-driven reefs with visible results
- Those who want exceptional snorkeling without complicated travel logistics
You could spend an entire week on the house reef alone and be completely happy. The boat trips simply expand an already strong experience.
Final Assessment
Navini Island Resort offers a rare combination:
- Easy international access
- A reef with a documented and successful restoration story
- A snorkeling-first mindset
- A healthy, vibrant reef as of September 2025
For snorkelers who measure a destination by time in the water and quality of marine life rather than resort scale or nightlife, snorkeling Navini Island stands out.
Hi Karen and Dennis, many thanks for such a thorough and useful post about snorkeling Navini Island in Fiji! The pictures are wonderful too!

I am glad to see your positive report from a dedicated snorkeler’s point of view. We tried to stay there in 2024 on our trip to Fiji, but they had a stay requirement (I think it was seven days), so we couldn’t book it. I think the timing coincided with Australian school holidays. This is just a heads up for people wanting to go there that they may require a minimum stay. I am glad you found good snorkeling, because we were disappointed in the snorkeling for the most part (except for the mantas at Barefoot Manta.) If we ever go back to Fiji, we’ll try Navini!
Thank you for this report, my wife and I were so excited to see how pristine the reefs are. We are staying at Matamanoa Island Resort Fiji for 10 days November 2026. It is great to see such beautiful pics of the reef and marine life.
Thanks again.
I stayed there last February. I say definitely take the daily snorkel boat to other reefs. The snorkeling off the beach is fairly good, but from the boats, just fantastic. Hotel is nice, hope you have a room with the plunge pool.
Great snorkel review! We used to scuba dive – Julian Rocks in NSW and Great Barrier Reef in QLD in Australia, Papua New Guinea (Madang and Rabaul, pre-eruption), Solomon Islands, Bahamas, and Grand Cayman. But we only snorkel now – Moorea and Bora Bora in French Polynesia, Solomon Islands (Uepi and Gizo), Heron and Lady Elliot Islands in Australia, and Maldives. Our 2020 snorkel trip to Curacao and Bonaire was cancelled as COVID took hold so we are always looking for good snorkeling holiday spots.
Most resorts cater more for divers and the locations are rarely ideal for snorkelers. We have been going to the Maldives because we can snorkel from the shore for hours on end with good visibility and a great variety of marine life, warm water, no wetsuit needed, etc.
We like to snorkel from the shore for hours everyday so we don’t have to rely on a boat or be restricted by time. It sounds like Navini could be our next destination! From your research or experience, can you recommend any similar island resorts in Fiji to combine with Navini? Main criteria is great snorkeling with great marine life (morays, eagle rays, octopus, batfish, manta rays, turtles, clown triggerfish, angelfish, puffers, box, porcupines, etc., rather than just schools of small fish).
Or any other Pacific resorts offering a similar criteria? Considering Cook Islands and we will also look at New Caledonia and maybe Palau as now direct flights from Brisbane. Would really love to do a trip to Misool and somewhere combo snorkel trip that are mentioned on this site.
Check out Wakatobi Resort – no big stuff (sharks) but a great reef and super easy to get to from Bali.
