Last March when we were on our vacation we went snorkeling at our favorite spot, Honaunau on the Big Island Hawaii. Suddenly were joined by a very curious and friendly Monk Seal; we named him Monty. He came up behind my husband and looked at him face to face. He then began to swim beside him and later chase his fins. He would swim below him and come up and look right at him almost with a smile. He was very cute! We watched him swim with us and few other snorkelers for about 15 minutes before he swam away. It was a very exciting experience.

Galen & Nicole – Apr 1, 2011 – Great pictures!

Brenda, that sounds wonderful! And the pictures are great. We have seen Monk Seals on the shore, but never snorkeled with them. Reading your story Nicole just about shouted “I want to snorkel with Monk Seals!” Thanks for sharing.

Read our Honaunau (Two Steps) page for directions to get there.
