Best Location for April Snorkeling in Eastern Australia?

By Mary

What is the best location for April snorkeling in eastern Australia? We’re going to be in the area in 2026 (Sydney, Melbourne, etc…) and, as long as we are there, we would love to do a little snorkeling. We’ve done quite a bit of snorkeling in the Caribbean and Hawaii over the last 30 years and have seen too much bleaching/degradation recently.

But if there are some relatively easy-to-access and still good places north of Brisbane, we’re in! We assume that we’d probably need to rent stinger suits and sign up for a tour. Any ideas to share?

Thank you.

  1. Cairns in northeast Australia is the center of all multiday trips to the Great Barrier Reef. We flew into Cairns from Sydney, stayed one night there and in the morning loaded the boat for three days GBR snorkeling. AMAZING!!!

  2. I recommend joining a liveaboard ship, which will allow you to visit the middle/outer portion on the reef where you’ll have a superior experience. And there’s nothing like waking at 6AM to slip into calm, clear waters for a pre-breakfast snorkel.

  3. Here’s some options:
Lady Musgrave Island – day trips from Burnett Heads.
Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island offer day trips out to the outer Great Barrier Reef (not the fringing reefs of the Whitsundays).
Cairns – lots of day trip options to the outer GBR – Milne and Flynn Reefs very good.

    Cheers.

  4. Highly recommend Lady Elliot Island on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef if you have limited time. Huge biodiversity in a small area with turtles, mantas, reef sharks, you name it. The only difficulty is the accommodation is frequently booked out, but they do offer day trips. Definitely worth looking at.

    • I agree with Lady Elliot Island. It’s wonderful but as it is at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, the water is a bit cooler. As I recall, the resort hires wetsuits.

  5. Hi Mary, I second all the above comments about the Great Barrier Reef. The reefs are all in way better condition that anything in Hawaii. There is very little bleaching in the more southern sections (i.e. Lady Elliot or Musgrave islands) but April is cyclone season, so keep an eye on the weather.

The great news is the East Australia Current keeps the coastal waters of southeastern Australia warm through April. In Northern New South Wales try Julian Rocks at Byron Bay or the Solitary Islands off Coffs Harbour (both require booking a boat tour). Around Sydney, try Shelley Beach at Manly or Clovelly and Gordons Bay, all easily accessible from the shore. In southern NSW, Green Patch in Jervis Bay is another great beach snorkel site, as is the western end of Murrays Beach. Also if you want to swim with fur seals, then take a boat tour to Montague Island from Narooma.

As for places around Melbourne, there are plenty in Port Phillip Bay and the Mornington Peninsular but I do not have personal experience of these.

    Happy travels in Australia, cheers.

  6. We have snorkeled off Cairns from two different locations, the first was rather poor, but the second was from a smaller boat and much better. We are booked to snorkel around the Whitsundays later this year.

  7. Flying from Brisbane you can get to Lady Elliott Island, or Heron Island. These two islands are basically the only two places where you are actually staying on the GBR. Cannot get better than these two.
