Land-Based Galapagos Snorkeling Trip 2022

By Walter Mosley

I went on a land-based Galapagos snorkeling trip back in 2022 and experienced a marvelous time snorkeling with underwater creatures. I stayed on several islands including Santa Cruz, Isabela, and San Cristobal. I also made day trips snorkeling at Santa Fe, Pinzon, and Espanola. While there’s little colorful coral, sponges and sea fans around these islands you will be fascinated sharing the water with many seafaring critters.

Off the southern coast of Isabella is Los Tuneles and Los Tintoreras both are volcanic structures. The snorkeling was great. I saw fur seals, sea lions, turtles, penguins and a sea horse. But the “piece de resistance” was at Leon Dormido Rock (a.k.a. Kicker Rock) off the northern coast of San Cristobal where we encountered a dozen hammerhead sharks. Watch out for the strong currents in between the rocks.

Of course there are many other wonderful land-based creatures to see on the islands that are worth seeing in their natural habitats around the archipelago.
