Snorkeling Mexico Rocks
Belize Snorkel Guide

Snorkeling Mexico Rocks is great, and it is only a short boat ride out of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. It is located about one third of the way up the coast of Ambergris Caye, between the barrier reef and the caye.

Unlike many of the snorkeling spots in Belize that are right on the barrier reef, Mexico Rocks is a star coral patch that is located in the shallow waters midway between the reef and the island.

Snorkeling Mexico Rocks

snorkeler Belize The snorkeling at Mexico rocks is very shallow, with a maximum depth of only about 12 feet.

Patch reefs dot the area, and the corals and soft sponges are very beautiful to explore.

And since this area is well inside the reef, it is protected from the bigger ocean swells, making it an excellent beginner's snorkeling spot in our minds.

Although we did not see a lot of larger fish, we saw many immature fish. We also spotted a turtle sailing away as we arrived. And we did not see many turtles in Belize at all, so that was a treat. We did see our first huge lobster here, as well as a nurse shark gliding away (see below).

Soft Corals & Sponges Belize The water visibility here was pretty good, particularly due to the shallow waters in the bright sunlight.

We can easily recommend this pleasant shallow snorkeling spot.

We had fun taking pictures while snorkeling Mexico Rocks, because it was so shallow and full of light. So there are a lot of pictures below, and then even a second page of pictures. You can see lots of soft corals (Gorgonians), including sea fans, sea rods, fire coral and a variety of sponges.

Below is a Grey Angelfish that was a regular companion to us at almost all the snorkeling spots in Belize.
