When To Snorkel Tonga & French Polynesia?

by Steve C.
(California USA)

When is best for time to snorkel Tonga and French Polynesia (Rangiroa, Huahine)? I have been to many snorkeling/scuba spots famous for their great visibility, only to encounter windy conditions with murky water. So in addition to the question of where to go, there should be discussion of when. Any insight into the best season for snorkeling these locations would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Fall in Tahiti
by: Gary

We snorkeled every day in Moorea and Bora Bora in April. Both are very sheltered by atolls so it was calm waters the whole time, at least by the resorts. Water and air were about 80°F. Occasional rains passed through but we rarely went inside and just sheltered under the beach umbrellas. Of course this is just one data point. I would be curious to know what others experienced.

La Nina
by: Cindy

We just returned from Bora Bora, Society Islands, Fakarava and Rangiroa, where we snorkeled every day.

It was beautiful, calm and warm, and the locals said it was because of a La Nina. The currents were quite strong on the shelf by the deep water off of Bora Bora, but the turtles were worth it.

Beach snorkeling off Fakarava was shallow with tall coral, but had lots of variety, especially triggerfish and wrasse.

Unicornfish and Giant Moray were my favorite in Society Islands.

Go When You Can!
by: Richard

My wife and I have snorkeled in French Polynesia for our vacations the last couple of years. We have been there (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea) in both July and September and found no problems with water clarity either time.

We only snorkeled in the lagoons so the water is more protected there, but the weather did not affect our snorkeling at any time.

We have snorkeled extensively in both the north and south Pacific and French Polynesia was definitely among the best we have experienced.

Their winter months (our summer months) are probably best for optimal conditions, but it is so great I'd say go whenever you can!

Nice Bora Bora House Reef in February
by: Jackie

We stayed and snorkeled at Sofitel Private Island, Bora Bora in Feb 2013. Weather ranged from beautiful to quite windy & choppy water at the end but it is the off season.

Small bommie off our water villa. It had a really nice house reef (other resorts run boat trips to it - called Aquarium or coral gardens), accessible from the shore (a 5-10 minute walk along the path & over some rocks) so no boat needed for us. There was nice live coral, moray eels, small octopus, no large fish but lots to keep us entertained for 3 days. Did the speedboat snorkel tour and saw mantas in the channel but they were very deep.
