What Type Of Wrasse Is This?

Does anybody know what type of wrasse juvenile this is? This cute little guy with red eyes and pointed black nose has a unique round black spot on its dorsal fin, so it doesn't really look like a Gaimard or Red Coris juvenile. I found it in Maldives, just few steps away from the beach at one of the islands at South Male Atoll, so the visibility wasn't very good due to the murky water/sand particles near the seashore.

Juvenile Wrasse
by: Mahonia

Hi, having just spent quite a bit of time looking closely at the photos in J.P. Hoover's "Hawaii's Fishes : A Guide for Snorkelers and Divers", my immediate reaction was "I've just seen & then looked up a picture of that wrasse!". But while your photo (very nice!) looks quite a bit like Hoover's photo of a Yellowtail Coris/Rainbow Wrasse, I'm not convinced it is the same fish -- your photo shows a prominent black spot that isn't shown in Hoover's photo.

Plus it sounds like you've already gone down that path, since "Gaimard's Wrasse" apparently is an alternate name for Yellowtail Coris...

It is so odd how some juvenile fish seem to be miniatures of their adult selves, while others (like this wrasse) are so different in coloration.

Coris frerei?
by: Bruce

It looks like the juevenile of Coris frerei, which is found in the Indian Ocean. You can find info on it at Wet Web Media. There is a picture of it at the top of the page and if you scroll down there's another with a comparison to the Yellowtail/Gaimard's Wrasse.

Queen Coris
by: Michel Kuijpers

I am quite sure it's a juvenile Queen Coris (Coris formosa). There is a good drawing in "The Coral Reef Guide Red Sea" by Ewald Lieske & Robert Myers.

Queen Coris / Corus formosa
by: Cape Vidal Snorkeling

It's a juvenile Queen Coris, we see them often while snorkeling at Cape Vidal, South Africa. :)
