Weight Belt When Snorkeling In A Wet Suit?

by Bob
(La Quinta, CA)

I was wondering if anyone uses a weight belt when snorkeling? I weigh about 185 lbs and my wife and I live in southern California so we wear wet suits most of the time. My wife is happy swimming along the top but I like to dive down for a better view. I am having a hard time staying down and am thinking of adding a weight belt. I would like to hear what others do. Thanks.

Yes - Get A Weight Belt
by: Galen & Nicole

Bob, yes it is common for snorkelers who free dive to use a weight belt, and with a wet suit you definitely need one to dive down with any ease.

Just make sure you get your weight values right by visiting a dive shop and having them help you. I recommend you stay positively bouyant so that you still float easily. And learn how to release the weigh belt quickly in case of emergency.

Galen and Nicole thank you for the advice, you also answered my next question which was to be neutrally buoyant or not.

Definitely if using wetsuit!

I agree with Galen & Nicole, if you are using a wet suit, even a shortie, you'll want a weight belt if you care at all about being able to dive & explore. Try it with & without -- I guarantee you'll see the value of the weight belt!

Thanks to all

Thank you for the feedback, I have tried multiple times without the belt and struggled. I will be picking up a belt and weights for our trip to Catalina. I will let you all know how it works out.

Weight Belt For Snorkeling
by: Galen

I wrote a weight belt for snorkeling page with more insights into wearing and choosing one. I noticed a difference when I was wearing my neoprene top and had my flip flops attached to my belt. I added a pound to my belt to allow me to have the same buoyancy that I did wearing just my rash guard top.
