Snorkeling Mid-Pacific Coast of Mexico?

by Martha Lee

I am looking for information about snorkeling the mid-Pacific coast of Mexico. A friend is considering spending 4 weeks at the Ixtapa Palace Resort and I am considering visiting her there for 1-2 weeks. I am an avid snorkeler (most of my experience has been in St. John USVI, Virgin Gorda BVI, Oahu, Kauai, South Florida, and Belize) and I have agreed to teach my friend.

Ixtapa is in Guerrero state, and it is about 2/3 of the way down the coast from Puerto Vallarta going towards Acapulco. My research so far has hinted that this part of the world has some adequate snorkeling but not great, but I would really like to hear from anyone who has been there and tried snorkeling. I am willing to get on the bus and travel up or down the coast to get to good snorkeling.

We also need a calmer place for my friend to try until she gets more confident (first lesson in the pool, though).

Thank you.
