Snorkel Gear Sets For Children

by Shiva

We are going to Cancun this month and have been searching for information and snorkel gear sets for children. We have 2 girls, one 8 yr old and the other almost 5. Both are tall with faces on the narrow side.

My questions are:

1. How do you figure out sizing for children's snorkel gear? (The standard Small/Medium/Large makes absolutely no sense to me.) What brands, models, or sets would you recommend? And where should we buy them?

2. Would you recommend wetsuits for the kids? Any particular brands? The little one knows how to swim but not very well.

3. For me and my wife, (we don't snorkel as often as we would like to) which would you recommend, rent or buy?

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

How To Choose Kids Snorkel Gear
by: Galen & Nicole

Hi Shiva. Good questions. It is pretty much impossible to accurately shop for snorkel gear for anyone, let alone kids, online. You can only guess. The sizes just don't mean much, and the shape of the face you are fitting is most important. Nothing beats going to a store and trying some on. Or if you have time, and a good return policy, you could order a few different sets and try them out, and return the stuff that does not work.

Do make sure and get a snorkel that is kid-sized. They have smaller mouth-pieces and smaller tubes. Kids need a smaller tube because their lungs are smaller, and with adult snorkels they may not fully expel their breath. So on the in-breath they may be pulling back in the expelled gas. It makes it harder for them to breathe.

As for brands, or types of sets, we have no real favorites. Whatever fits and is comfortable is what's important. Before you go to the store, we do recommend you first read our mask fitting suggestions and other equipment tips.

As for renting or buying, we nearly always recommend buying, if you can afford it, and don't mind hauling it around with you in your suitcase, which is a real consideration for a family. As an alternative to buying all your gear, We like the idea of just buying a mask and snorkel and renting fins. The mask and snorkel are the most important thing to get fit correctly.

We are not sure if you need wetsuits for the kids. It will depend on the water temperatures you will find and how long you think you will stay in the water. Long sleeved rash guards are easy to recommend though. They will keep everyone a bit warmer, and provide some essential sun protection.

We would highly recommend inflatable Kids Snorkel Vests for safety.

Have a great time.

Thank you !

Thank you for your comments. I did end up finding a store that was open and carrying children's sizes.

Purchased masks, snorkels, fins and a couple of wetsuits for the kids. Had to order snorkel vests online with rush delivery.

For the wife and I, we are just going to rent there... We did get a couple of rashguard shirts.
