Great topic and very interesting comments to read. I currently live on the east coast of Florida and have snorkeled in quite a few places around the world. I'm currently near Komodo Island sitting in my room after a long day of snorkeling researching where I can live and snorkel everyday. Happy searches.

I just stumbled on this thread as we just got back from two weeks in Maui. I think our seventh trip there. I’m in that stage of wishing I was still there. We’ve had our snorkel everyday fantasies and I found all this advice so helpful even if we don’t ever pull up stakes from family.

No one has mentioned Costa Rica and I’m wondering why. We’ve just started to think we should visit there but had the impression the snorkeling wasn't fantastic. Anyone been there? A friend of a friend bought a home down there last year.

Although we are far from avid snorkelers, we do enjoy it, and, like many of you, have been looking for that perfect place to retire.

We have cruised the Caribbean, and have fallen in love with most of the islands, but we have yet to spend more than a few hours anywhere. It's a great way to visit a lot of places, but not a good way to judge retirement potential.

So we have decided upon retirement, to spend at least a month in a place to see what it's like: traffic, locals, food, beaches, reefs, etc. Only then will we know what that place is like.

Thank you all for your comments and insights, Erin and I hope to see you out snorkeling one day!
