Large anemone in clear waters - snorkeling Vahine Island, French Polynesia
My husband and I enjoyed a nine day snorkeling trip to French Polynesia in April 2018. We flew from LAX directly to Papete, Tahiti.
From there we took a smaller plane to the island of Taha'a, where we transferred by boat to Vahine Island.
The island is private, and we were amazed by the clarity of the water. Our initial snorkel was a drift snorkel near the island. The first picture is of a large anemone in the clear waters. While we had heard many good things about the snorkeling here, we found it to be underwhelming compared to what we expected. There were few fish, but we could see many feet down with no problem.
Our next stop was Bora Bora at the Conrad Nui Resort. We found fabulous snorkeling there. There were a great variety of fish right off our bungalow, where the second picture was taken. We took a half-day boat ride where we saw a HUGE moray eel, walked on the softest sand next to sting rays, swam with black-tip reef sharks, and relaxed in warm, shallow water with the fish next to us.
I got up each morning and jumped into the water, and my husband had a hard time getting me out. The water is clear most of the time, and the fish variety was awesome with tangs, boxfish, butterflyfish, bannerfish, squirrelfish, and many more species on a daily basis.
The water is warm and so calm, compared to my snorkeling in Maui. I just lay on top of the water and was amazed by the underwater scenery.
It was a magical trip, and I would highly recommend Bora Bora for its snorkeling beauty.
