Hawaiian Monk Seal Behavior, Tunnels, Kauai

by Carl Hutcherson
(Wimberley, Texas)

On our last trip to Kauai, at Tunnels, we encountered a couple of very playful Hawaiian Monk Seals that swam right up to me. It appeared that they were as curious about my camera as I was about them.

Is this a common activity for them, or was I just blessed to be at the right place at the right time?

Below is my video of the interaction. Sorry it is so jumpy, but I was trying to keep myself between the seals and my wife in case they got aggressive.

Galen & Nicole, I just wanted to thank y'all for your fantastic website and guides. It is a wonderful resource for us folks who really enjoy snorkeling and viewing Gods creatures.

Thanks again!

Good Question
by: Nicole & Galen

Good question Carl. We do not really know the answer. Maybe some other folks can chime in.

Definitely a magical experience for the memory banks and a great video. We have never gotten to snorkel with Hawaiian Monk Seals before, though we have seen them hanging out on beaches plenty of times. Often they are cordoned off so that people don't get too close.

We are glad you appreciate what we do. It is nice to hear.

Thanks for sharing! What a great experience. I've only ever seen one monk seal at a time. Congrats on capturing that moment.

Having snorkeled the Hawaiian Islands for several decades and having encountered many monk seals both in and out of the water, your experience was exceptional; both in their interaction with you and with one another. Lucky you!
