Good Snorkeling in the Dominican Republic?

by Lynn Fowler

Is there any good snorkeling anywhere in the Dominican Republic? We were thinking about taking a trip there, probably somewhere on the Samana Peninsula or Punta Cana. Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Dominican Republic Snorkeling
by: Anonymous

A few years back, we stayed in La Romana (south side of the Dominican Republic) and experienced some decent snorkeling among the patch reefs. These reefs were right off the beach in fairly shallow water, 5-10 feet deep.

Some Fish, but Not Much Good Snorkeling in the Dominican Republic
by: Anonymous

We stayed on the southwest side of the island near Barahona and tried snorkeling at a nearby beach called Quemaito and on the very west side in Bahia de las Aguilas. It was December 2012 and there were some small fish to be seen, but really nothing of note. Quemaito is interesting because fresh water aquifers come right out of the sand and pour cold, fresh water into the warmer salt water. The water was rough here and kicked up quite a bit of murk.

At Bahia de las Aguilas, there were some damaged or dead coral and very few fish. Even in 15-20 feet of water there was nothing to be seen. The only fish were in 3-4 feet of water right near a long rocky coral outcropping.

On the plus side the water was about 80 degrees. We stayed on a relatively un-touristy side of the Dominican Republic. The larger resorts in Punta Cana as well as other parts of the island may have better snorkeling.
