Caribbean Snorkeling Destination with Golf?

by J Gill
(Wash DC area)

I am looking for a good Caribbean snorkeling destination with golf. Thinking about Jamaica, or Dominican Republic, or Grand Cayman. I heard that Dominican Republic is not very good.

We had a family trip to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico and snorkeled three times with kids 16 and 12. It was a first time for us, so we are basically rookies.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Caribbean Golf
by: Bill R

I've played a couple of different places around the Caribbean but not knowing exactly what you expect to spend on golf (or are willing to) I don't want to give advice that is more than you are willing to budget!

Curacao has a couple of different golf courses but I prefer Blue Bay Golf and Beach Resort. We rented a house/car so we didn't stay at the resort itself but it was perfect for us. The wife and two (then) teenager daughters were able to use the beach area for a small fee while I played 18 holes solo. The course was well maintained and had some stunning views including a par three surround by the Caribbean waters. I'm not a great golfer but I would think for a vacation round even low handicap golfers would enjoy it. Titleist clubs for rent if you don't bring your own (I think $50 which isn't bad).

Aruba has a couple of golf courses as well. I've been snorkeling in Aruba (excellent--find the non tourist spots if you can) but I've never golfed there. I have a friend that takes an Aruba trip every year and he says he prefers Tierra del Sol and Divi Aruba. He is a better golfer than I am (single handicap) so not sure if that makes a difference.

No matter where you go, if you have the time/budget it is always fun to check out the local courses. It's a great way to meet some of the locals and get the island intel on things to do.

Hope this helped a little!

Cozumel - Playa Azul Golf, Scuba, Spa Hotel
by: Shiela

Although we do not play golf, we stayed at Playa Azul Golf, Scuba, Spa Hotel in Cozumel. The rate includes your golf fees so it was a bit higher than other places but I went there for the snorkeling. This was a great place to snorkel and the hotel was very nice. Great restaurant and bar as well. They have a beach club next door that got quite a few visitors but only for one day for several hours. They were not a bother at all. Very friendly staff as well.
