RE: Camera Filter For Snorkeling
by: Galen & Nicole

Hi Robert. I have never heard of anyone using a blue or green filter on their lens when snorkeling. Because the water is already going to push your pictures towards the blue side of the color spectrum, you actually need to use a red colored filter to balance that out and get more natural colors.

It is possible that in the more green cold waters up in say Washington State or Alaska you might use a different color of filter, but everywhere tropical I have used red.

I use a Magic Filter that is a special color of red/orange. You can see how I use it at the bottom of this page.

It is important to note though that in shallow conditions a red filter will often push your colors too far red unless you know how to adjust your white balance for each situation. I do that constantly with the Magic Filter, and I also will often have to adjust the images slightly in Photoshop to get the colors that my eye saw.
