Turtles Relaxing at Stunning Kiholo Bay

I noticed you did not have Kiholo Bay in your Big Island snorkeling list. Kiholo is a bit of a hike, and not necessarily a great snorkeling spot, but it is a fabulous place to check out resting turtles, and to swim at. I never miss it when I am on the Big Island.

The bay was created by King Kamehameha as a fish pond. It has a pretty interesting historical story. The color of the water is stunning because of the white sandy bottom.

I use "The Big Island Revealed" guidebook for directions on how to hike out to Kiholo. If you go don't miss the Queen's Bath. It is a fresh water pool in a lava tube close to shore. The top of the lava tube has been broken/eroded away. You climb down a little ladder and have a wonderful (but chilly) fresh water soak to get the salt water off before hiking back. Bliss!

Kiholo is a gem!

Thanks so much for telling us how much you like Kiholo Bay.

Nicole and I (Galen) could not agree more. We have been there a couple of times. We did not include it in our guide because, like you said, it is not really a great snorkeling spot. But we have enjoyed snorkeling there, checking out the turtles, and swimming around in the shallow waters. Remembering how much we like it I am glad you added it to this site.

And yes, the Queen's Bath is heavenly.

Galen

P.S. I found some nice pictures of Kiholo and added them to your story.
