Tough Workout - Snorkeling Punalu'u Beach , Oahu

by Randy
(Kailua Bay, Oahu, HI)

Just started snorkeling a couple weeks ago and went out with someone who grew up here. I had just increased my weight belt to 6 pounds. We were going to go out to the breakwater where the reef is but after 20 minutes and little progress I had to grab his buoy and we headed back to shore. There were clouds and strong wind and the currents were strong. The water was cloudy and we could barely see bottom. The water was 7+ feet deep and I think it stays about that deep all the way out to the reef. He said its great there. We saw someone come out of the water with a 6ft taco (octopus).

If you want to snorkel just to practice that would be a great place as you have to go out a pretty good distance to get in water above your head.

Snorkeling Punalu'u Beach Park
by: Galen & Nicole

Randy - Thanks for sharing your experience about Punalu'u Beach. It is a beautiful beach, although it sounds like you had a miserable time. When we have visited it has always been windy and wavy, so unless it is super calm out, it makes for a difficult place for a beginning snorkeler, despite it's shallow depths.
