The Evil Eel - Snorkeling Hanauma Bay

by Emily
(California)

Me, my dad, and my sister were snorkeling at the beginning of the outer reef at Hanauma Bay, Oahu. We were looking at the fish swimming around us. I was turned the opposite direction my dad was facing. I heared a sound but I ignored it. Then someone grabs my flipper. I turned around and my dad is pointing at a six foot long Moray Eel twenty feet in front of us. It had popped out of a hole. It swam towards us like we were gonna fed it. No Way! We swam backwards slowly but it kept getting close and closer to us. It stopped 3 feet in front of us as we were backing up and swam away. It turns out my sister thought it was gonna attack us and now calls it the evil eel. The moral to the story is.... don't feed eels. When they get used to it they follow little girls thinking they have food.

The Moray of the story is ...
by: Galen & Nicole

Emily, that is a fun story. Thanks for sharing it. We will have to keep our eyes peeled for the "Evil Eel" the next time we snorkel Hanauma Bay. I am sure it was a little scary, but I bet it was pretty interesting also, seeing that big eel. Hopefully it does not keep your sister from snorkeling again.
