It's new camera season again. FujiFilm actually announced 30 new cameras in their new 2012 lineup. And three of these are waterproof tough cameras. The XP150 and XP100, are identical cameras, but the XP100 lacks GPS. They both have a 28-140mm equivalent zoom lens, have a 14mp sensor capable of full 1080HD video, are waterproof down to around 33 feet, and are shock proof, and have sensor-shift type image stabilization. And the other new camera is the XP50, which is essentially the same camera as the XP100, but is only waterproof down to around 16 feet, which is plenty deep enough for most snorkelers. Price is not known yet, but the earlier models of these cameras were very affordable.

The camera is getting good reviews, but my main concern is how the wider angle lens will work with the new underwater housing. Well, I just found a YouTube videos of what appears to be the first published images from this combination, and I am at this point very happy with the results I am seeing. Once I see a few more examples I think we will be buying two of these with housings for our next trip. Click the link below to see the video.

For our next snorkeling trip this spring we are headed to Aruba, Curacao and back to Bonaire for a one month trip. We did not expect to visit Bonaire again so soon, but there are more requests for snorkeling info for Aruba and Curacao (Bonaire's neighbor islands), than anywhere else in the Caribbean. So we will take the opportunity to visit Bonaire again also, to update our guide into a second edition. Many people visit two or three of these islands on one trip, so making guides available for all of them is exciting for us. Of course, one of the deciding factors to also include Bonaire was that we could get $2200 worth of free tickets through our miles program with Continental to Bonaire, but not to Aruba or Curacao. So we will take interisland flights between. We can't wait!

Sep 15, So Excited! Our next snorkeling cameras - Canon S100 Announced

Boy, I love Canon. They really listen to their customers. You may already know, but my current and favorite snorkeling camera is the Canon S90 (new version is the S95). Well, Canon just announced the new S100, and while the S95 was a very minor upgrade, the S100 looks like a major upgrade. They have fixed so many little things that I still wanted in the S90. It has a wider and longer zoom lens, from 24-120mm compared to 28mm on the S90. It has a dedicated movie button with full HD. It shoots much faster (this is big for capturing fish and one of my few complaints about the S90). And there are many other valuable updates, like a 12mp cmos censor, a gps, and what looks like a larger battery, and even a new hand grip. And yet it still retains the essence of what I liked about the S90, a fast F2.0 lens, manual controls, and a programmable button for one push white balance adjustements. The camera is to be released some time in November. After I see some reviews we will be getting a couple of these with new underwater cases for me and Nicole. I can't wait!
