Snorkeling Waiopae (Marine Conservation Area) - Big Island Hawaii

by Phyllis
(Eugene, Oregon)

Waiopae coral and fish

Waiopae coral and fish

Years ago (1995), I learned about this spot in Kapoho when I was attending a retreat at Kulani (Southeast coast) and obtained a map to this "local attraction." Like many places on the Big Island, you might never get in the water from the look from above. Directly out from a small rough parking lot there is a lava shore with holes/pools encrusted with coral; however, there still are NO facilities except for the small parking lot. I knew that in order to explore fully the snorkeling, I needed to rent a home within walking distance. Was that ever one of the best vacation decisions I have ever made! In Spring 2010, our party of four stayed on the far west end of the housing development and went out daily. There are parts of this tiny "bay" that have warm water pockets. The snorkeling is terrific–unspoiled coral and schools of fish. This is now one of my favorite places in the world!

Great Phyllis! We are headed back to snorkel Kapoho (the old name for Waiopae) early next summer and your post got us excited again.
