Snorkeling in Bonaire - Video Question

Hi Guys.... Just watched your fantastic video on YouTube.

Question: What camera did you use to do your video? The color is so lifelike (unlike mine, which is all green), and your video is so smooth (unlike mine, which is all over the place).

Thanks so much...... Carol

Hi Carol,

I am glad to hear you liked our video. You didn't find the beginning just a little bit cheesy?

Good questions. We are by no means experts when it comes to video, rank amateurs really. While we have enjoyed shooting short video clips in the past this was our first attempt at putting them together with some music into a short movie.

The camera I used was the Canon S90. It is a superb little camera, but it's replacement is even better, the Canon S95. It has HD video and stereo sound (the S90 is not HD).

The way I get good colors is through the combined use of a magic filter, and regularly adjusting the manual white balance. You can learn more about the magic filter here, and about setting a manual white balance here.

And as for getting smooth video, the trick is to have a decent camera, but mostly move very slowly. Although you may want to pan quickly to follow a fish, I quickly learned that jerky motion looks bad in a video. On some of the clips in our movie they were still too jerky, so I actually slowed those clips down a little to help reduce the problem.

Finally, getting the movie to look half way decent on YouTube was a chore all by itself, and I am still not nearly satisfied with the results. That movie looks so much better on my computer than on YouTube.

OK. Ask away. More questions please. I love talking photo/video.

Galen
