Snorkeling in Belize?

We are taking our children on a cruise and get to snorkel in Belize. This is the first time for our children (ages 12, 15 and 21). Do you suggest Turneffe Atoll or Rendezvous Caye?

Thanks so much!

Which Belize Snorkel Spot?
by: Galen & Nicole

Between the two, Turneffe Atoll or Rendezvous Caye, we would suggest Rendezvous Caye. Why? For a couple of reasons. First, Rendezvous is one of the better snorkel spots on Belize. We have had great experiences there (read the page at the link above). It offers some very healthy and beautiful reef, tons of fish, and a very picturesque scene. The most important reason though is because to access Turneffe Island you have to take a boat across open ocean, vs the more protected waters inside the barrier reef to access Rendezvous Caye. This can be a hair raising if not dangerous experience, particularly for inexperienced snorkelers.

But even Rendezvous Caye can be a bit rough if the weather is up, because it sits right on the barrier reef edge (which is one of the reasons why it is so healthy and beautiful). For beginners, there are a couple of other spots on Belize that might be better, like Mexico Rocks, or Hol Chan along with it's trip to Shark Ray Alley. Explore our Belize pages to learn more about those. Have a great trip.
