Snorkeling Electric Beach Is AWESOME! - Oahu

by Mike
(Yokosuka, Japan)

I'm only on Oahu for a few days of work with the Navy. Yesterday after work I went snorkeling at Electric Beach after reading the description on this website. It was awesome! I didn't go too far out but there were a ton of fish and a cool type of urchin I had never seen before. I was only in the water for about 45 minutes.

Today I started out at Ko Olina Lagoon #4 after reading the review on this web site. I was pretty disappointed with that lagoon. It has it's merits for timid beginner swimmers but the water was very cloudy and there wasn't much to see until I got right by the entrance to the lagoon. I may take my 5 year old son here when we come back in a few months.

So after about 20 minutes in Lagoon #4 I went back to Electric Beach and I am so glad I did. Before I even got in the water I saw a turtle playing in the surf. When I got in I was able to swim with him for about 5 minutes. Then I went all the way out to where the power plant is pumping out the water and it is amazing. The visibility was great and there are an amazing assortment of fish all around the area.

I can see why people take boats out there. It is a bit of a swim, but with fins it's not hard. Maybe 10 minutes to get back in. Anyway, if you are looking for a quick snorkel on the west side this place kicks butt.

Electric Beach - Oahu
by: Galen & Nicole

Mike, thanks for that review. It sounds like you had a blast snorkeling Electric Beach/Kahe Point. And looking over what we have written about Ko Olina, it really should say that it is best for younger folks or beginners. We will update it.

We have updated the site since our last Oahu trip to reflect Mike's review of snorkeling Ko Olina Lagoons. Our Kahe Point/Electric Beach page has been updated too.

I have a question...
by: Andrew

Is there a way to get to the power plant area by bus? Thank you so much.

Da Bus
by: Galen & Nicole

Andrew, there is a public bus that goes up that way. It's called The Bus, or as they say it locally "DaBus". Here is the schedule and route map.
