Snorkeling Akumal Bay Mexico

by Maureen
(Edmonton, AB. Canada)

Akumal Bay is quiet & calm most days, and protected via the Mesoamerica reef offshore Akumal, MX. Fly into Cancun and it's about a 1.5 hour drive south to Akumal. It is a beautiful spot, and is known for it's abundance of sea turtles. Don't tell anyone I told you about this lovely spot though, as those of us who frequent Akumal want it to remain pristine & lovely! Please read up on your "snorkeling etiquette" and let's keep this beautiful spot safe for future generations of snorkeling enthusiasts!

Akumal Bay Snorkeling Sounds Good
by: Galen & Nicole

Maureen, that sounds great. We will have to keep that in mind for the next time we are snorkeling Mexico.

Akumal Bay Barracudas
by: Anonymous

We went to Playa del Carmen a few years ago with some friends, and another fellow and I made it down to Akumal Bay for some snorkeling. It was great, although a little worrisome swimming through between the boats. We saw a good number of turtles but the neatest thing was the big barracudas, especially the monster one in the middle of enormous "fish ball" in the middle of bay. Zillions of silver fish with a space in the middle occupied by the supervising barracuda! Another great spot on our vacation was Puerto Morelos, with a lovely live reef. Hope to make it back some day.

Akumal
by: Tanya

This was my exciting introduction
to snorkeling and now I am hooked for life. It is very quiet (hardly any people!) and we spent hours in the water marvelling at the marine life, especially the turtles. Just hope it doesn't get all commercialised.
