Maui Snorkeling Guide
Slaughterhouse Beach (Makule'ia Bay)

Just on the other side of the hill from Honolua Bay, this Maui snorkeling spot offers some pretty good snorkeling in a fairly protected bay. Slaughterhouse Beach, on Makule'ia Bay. What a name! There used to be two slaughterhouses close by, and this locals name sticks to this day, despite the slaughterhouses being torn down over thirty years ago.

One big advantage to snorkeling here instead of Honolua is the beautiful beach.

There is a fairly steep walk down lots of stairs and a steep path to access this beach. And the waters here are part of the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay marine life conservation district.

The snorkeling can be excellent on the right hand side of this little bay. But like Honolua, it can sometimes be cloudy if there are waves or rain recently. There are some very colorful corals here and lots of fish.

But this location is not as protected as Honolua, and is a very popular bodysurfing spot, because of how the waves can break on this shore. So it is probably better in the summer months.

There are no facilities available here.

Driving Directions to Slaughterhouse Beach (Mokule'ia Bay) from Kihei

In Kihei get on Hwy 31 (Piilani Hwy) or S Kihei Rd heading north. When you reach the intersection with Hwy 311 (Mokulele Hwy) and Hwy 310 (N Kihei Rd) turn onto Hwy 310 (N Kihei Rd) and follow to the next intersection with Hwy 30 (Honoapiilani Hwy) and turn left, heading initially south. This road is what you will follow halfway around west Maui. You will pass by Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua. After you pass by the Kapalua Resort area, you will come closer to the water again and pass signs for DT Fleming Beach Park. Past the 32 mile marker, there will be a turnout with a green chainlink fence on the bluff which is Slaughterhouse Beach. Park here and take the stairs to the beach.
