Maui Snorkeling Guide
5 Caves (Five Caves, Five Graves)

This is reportedly a great Maui snorkeling spot. But Five Caves (or is it Five Graves?), has not been a location we have been able to snorkel. The entrance is a tiny little inlet that can be incredibly surgy. The last time we tried it we met some divers coming out who said it was a nightmare trying to get into and out of the water. Now admittedly they are weighted down with a lot of junk, but if you check out the videos of the turtles getting tossed around below, you will see it was wise not to try it.

Here is a picture of a kayak snorkeling group. That might be a good way to snorkel this area of coastline.

The next picture may be part of the confusion about the name. There are suppose to be a lot of caves, but there is also a small graveyard close by that has about five graves.

If you do get a chance to snorkel 5 Caves on a calm day, it is supposedly very good. But it is supposed to be a pretty long swim out to where the caves are, so it is more for advanced snorkelers. There is supposed to be some very interesting underwater sights, including a good number of caves, and tons of turtles. We can certainly attest to seeing lots of turtles, even from shore.

Just to show you how surgy it was last time when we tried to snorkel here, check out this video. If the turtles are getting tossed around like this, I don't even want to try it.

If you have snorkeled 5 Caves let us know what it is like. Next time we will try again!

Driving Directions to 5 Caves/5 Graves from Kihei

Head south on S Kihei Rd. Towards the end of the road, there is an intersection where you can veer left onto Okolani Dr, do this and go to the intersection with Wailea Alanui Dr and turn right. Follow this through the big intersection with Wailea Iki Dr near The Shops at Wailea. Keep driving through the intersection with Kaukahi St, the road you are on is now called Makena Alanui Rd. You will see Wailea Golf Club Dr on your left and Makena Rd on your right, pass the parking lot for Po'olenalena Beach and the Makena Surf and take the next right onto Makena Rd (yes another one.) Before the road turns to the left park on the left, cross the street and walk towards the water.
