Magic Filter in Underwater Case Snorkeling

by P French
(Venice Fl)

I see that you cut the magic filter to fit on the inside of your underwater case. How do you clean your case when you are done snorkeling? Do you only clean the outside of the housing or do you also clean the inside? What steps do you take to protect your magic filter. I am headed to Bonaire in November and just picked up a s95 and ordered case and magic filters. I am anxious to see what affect the filters have on pictures. I snorkel only so I will be using all your tips which I thank you for.

Cleaning Magic Filter
by: Galen & Nicole

Good question. For anyone else who is interested he is referring to this page which describes how I install the Magic Filter in my underwater case.

Once I get the Magic Filter installed in the case I do my best to never touch it again. They scratch pretty easily. If there is a big piece of dust on it I will blow it off with a photography air bulb brush. So, along those lines, I do my best not to get any dust in the case. When the camera is not in it I make sure and close it, and I am quick when opening and closing it.

The key to success with using the Magic Filter while snorkeling is to learn how to use the manual white balance setting on your camera. Because in shallow bright situations you will end up with very red pictures without adjusting your white balance. So it is not a perfect solution. But once you learn to set white balance the total number of pictures you get that have excellent color will be greatly increased over not using the filter. And the great thing about the Canon S95 is that it has a button you can set so that with one button push you can instantly set a new white balance.

After each picture take a quick look at your viewing screen and see what your color balance looks like. If it looks too red, or off in some other way, take another white balance setting and then take the shot again, unless the fish is already gone! It is a learned art for sure, with a bit of trial and error to get it right. But if you don't like it take out the Magic Filter, but continue to use the manual white balance setting for better colors. Both Nicole and I change it for almost every shot.

Have fun in Bonaire! You will love it and your new camera setup.
