Kauai Snorkeling Guide
Lydgate State Park

This is one Kauai snorkeling spot that would be great for you if you are learning, have little ones who want to snorkel in what is normally a very safe, protected pool, or a place to check out fish if the weather is too rough to snorkel anywhere else.

Lydgate State Park is good sized, with lots of facilities, grass for soaking up the sun on, and is very popular with the locals and families.

Kauai Snorkeling

The beginners snorkeling area is within two man-made little pools that are ringed with rock. Even when it is pretty windy and wavy these two pools are normally safe to swim in. And because people feed the fish constantly here, it is often a good place to see a lot of them up close and personal.

To see more fish it is best to come early in the morning, and hang out near the rock barrier.

And like I said above, if the waves and wind are a little big in other areas of the island (not unusual), you may still have a chance to see some fish here without risking getting hurt. But that does not mean that a big wave could not still come over those rocks!

Driving Directions - Lydgate State Park from Lihue
Kauai Snorkeling

Lihue is the airport town. From Lihue, follow either Hwy 51 (Kapule Hwy) or Hwy 56 (Kuhio Hwy) north out of town to the intersection of the two, where you can only follow Hwy 56. Stay on this road heading north for about two miles and you will see signs for Lydgate State Park. Turn right onto Leho Dr and once in the park take your second right, Nalu Rd, and follow this to the left down to the restrooms and lifeguard station across from large pavillion. Park near here for the pools.
