Can anyone identify this unusual Big Island Hawaii fish? I saw this at 2 Step snorkel spot. Anyone have an idea what it might be? Thanks.

We think we can!

Hi Rick, that is a pretty unique fish all right. Looking through our Reef Fish ID Tropical Pacific by Allen, Steene, Humann, Deloach, we are pretty sure it is a juvenile Alectis ciliaris. There are many common names: African Pompano, Threadfin Jack, Threadfin Trevally to name a few. It looks like you got your shot from above a little bit.

We found two images on the fishbase.org website from Honaunau of that fish, this one and this one.

You can find many more images by searching Google for any of the common names or the scientific name.

Thanks for sharing this!

A most unusual fish to come across after many snorkel trips to the Big Island. Thanks Galen and Nicole.

Threadfin Jack
by: Brenda

Hi, I saw this fish last year. It is a juvenile Threadfin Jack and very rare to see. I was told not to post where I saw it because of people that like to scoop fish out of the ocean and sell them for aquariums. I find this very sad! It was such a beautiful and unique fish to see!
