Hotels in Hawaii

Hotels in Hawaii can actually be pretty resonable in cost. We don't spend enough time in our vacation lodging to warrant paying much more than $100 per night. And we like to go on longer trips, during which eating out for every meal can get old. So our solution has been to look for alternatives to hotels, like condos, apartments or other vacation rentals that have kitchens.

Of course there are a range of hotels in Hawaii. They range from the posh, luxurious resorts, to the simpler mid-range hotels that are sometimes in town, to more funky local hotels, to the alternatives mentioned above. In choosing the location of your lodging, keep in mind what you are on this trip for... snorkeling! On Oahu, most of the accomodations are in Waikiki, but the snorkeling is all over the island, so be prepared for driving. On Maui, you should stay in Wailea/Makena, Kihei, Ka'anapali, or Kapalua/Napili. We usually stay in Kihei for cost and access to the most snorkeling. Check out our page with more on hotels in Maui. On the Big Island, you should stay in Kona or on the Kohala coast north of there. You will be near most of the snorkeling and will have the best chance of good weather. There are more tips on choosing your Big Island hotel on this page. On Kauai, the snorkeling is the exception because it is on the north, east and south shores. You can stay in the Princeville/Hanalei area in the north, in the Kapa'a/Lihue area or in the Po'ipu area in the south or split your stay! There is more specific information on our hotels in Kauai page. Make sure to read our snorkeling guides for more specifics about snorkeling locations.

Along with the many of types of hotels in Hawaii, you get many price options too. Some islands are more pricey than others and some have more budget options than others. Oahu is not cheap, but probably has the best occasional deals. Maui is probably the most expensive, with the least options for mid to low range hotels, but LOTS of condos. The Big Island has the most options, quality and price wise. Kauai is more like Maui, but maybe not quite so pricey.

When we are looking for hotels, we find TripAdvisor's hotels in Hawaii page to be invaluable. They have lots of reviews of hotels and other accomodations that can help you make a more informed decision about where to stay. Be sure to check TripAdvisor for vaction rentals. We have had some great luck finding money-saving deals as compared to Hawaii hotels. They also have kitchens or kitchenettes which we like to break up the eating out.
