First Time Snorkeling Kauai Hawaii

by Jerry Banks
(Utah)

The first time I snorkeled it was in Kauai Hawaii. I put everything on and pushed my way through the waves and got in.

Two things happened to me. #1 I was amazed at the beautiful world that existed that I had no clue was there. I was amazed at the wonder, the beauty and the life. Fish everywhere. I remember seeing an eel and needlefish all around me. It was spectacular. #2 It was hard for me to breath and that scared me a little. However as a 26 year old man I was not going to admit that to anyone. I just found it hard to breath in and I was breathing real fast. When I got home a friend explained that it was the weight of the water against the body (made sense). In the end the breathing took some getting use to however the beauty is amazing. I actually became a diver because of that one snorkel experience.

Thanks for your first time Kauai snorkeling story!
by: Galen

Thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like snorkeling for your first time in Kauai was a defining moment for you.

As for having a hard time breathing, I suspect it had more to do with not being relaxed your first time snorkeling. A natural response, considering you are trying to breath with your face in the water. I don't think there is much water pressure at the surface when snorkeling, but I could easily be incorrect about that.

I understand the breathing thing
by: Krashzmom

I had a hard time getting used to breathing through the snorkel too. My husband still uses goggles. It's like Galen said though, once you relax everything's ok. I have to go through the same thing, acclamating myself to the snorkel when we first arrive on a new trip. The fins are hard for me to get used to. I'm sure with time and MORE TRIPS I won't have a bit of trouble. 8-)
Happy snorkeling!
