Condo Recommendation on Maui with Snorkeling?

Hi,

We just planned a trip to Maui for this coming June (purchased airfare). We would like recommendations for condos where there is fairly decent snorkeling right out the door. Thanks for your help!

Jeanne

Maui is my all time love. One of the best places we stayed was Hale Napili. It's near Lahaina (a neat little town) and it's on Napili bay and right beside Kapalua bay (where I learned to snorkel). Hale Napili is an 18 unit complex right on the water. Jackie and Patti are very welcoming and it's just a neat experience. It's not real fancy but very clean and there's a laundry area with detergent included and a store across the driveway. If you want fancy the Westin is nice but I didn't snorkel there so I'm not sure about that. That is my suggestion and call early because it's sometimes booked a year in advance for repeat visitors. Have fun.

Maui Condos

We have stayed a number of times at Hale Kamaole, which is in Kihei right across from Kamaole II beach. Although not necessarily well written up, the last time we went to Maui in Feb 2010, the conditions throughout the island were generally rough with poor visibilty (maybe because this was right after the "tunamic" from the Chile earthquake), but I would rate the visibilty and quality of the coral and fish at Kam II as being highest I found (and I am a pretty devoted snorkeler). The left side of the beach out along the rocks is the best, although the coral does stretch across towards the middle of the bay quite a ways. I always saw the resident two to four turtles (sometimes in feeding on the seaweed on the very left side of the rocks), and besides all the usual fish I saw banded eels, octopus, various other eels, and cleaning stations. You can easily walk or snorkel over to the south to Kam III, or go around the north point to Kam I. A further walk down the beach can lead you to go in at the boat launch and snorkel all the way down to the Five Palms (you gotta go for breakfast!). You can take a snorkel tour out of the boat launch to Molokini (swim in close to the wall if you can, although I have not found Molokini all that great for snorkeling, but pretty good for diving). There are other condos in the area, and it is a short walk to a fair number of good restaurants. You can watch whales from your balcony at the right time of year. Kihei is dry and you don't get much rain, so even if it raining up north, the conditions down south can be very nice. And Kihei is not a real expensive area; if you are feeling rich, there are condos down in Wailea near some good (although busier) snorkeling areas. At Kam II, it was often less than a half dozen people snorkeling, and if you get out early, might just be one or two. And there are lifeguards, if you feel nervous.
