Canon S90 Underwater Housing With Custom Grip?

I ended up stumbling upon your very informational site while hunting down the best underwater camera options and due to that, I ended up with a very good used Canon S90. Now, in looking for the housing, I realized that the custom made grip glued to the front of the camera, only slightly bulging out for a right hand grip, which is great for safer handling but I just realized that this may be a problem with the housing. I imagine that the camera fits snug in the housing. Can you tell me about this? I don't know if the grip can come off. Maybe I can email a picture to you.
Thanks for any advice that you can give to me. By the way, I am going to Raja Ampat, in Papau, New Guinea for a snorkel trip of a lifetime!! This is why I wanted such a good camera.
Again thanks for such a great site!

Anni

S90 Housing with S90 Custom Grip
by: Galen & Nicole

Hi Anni. That is an interesting question. I am familiar with that custom grip for the S90. It is great to have. But you are correct, the Canon housing will not work with that grip on your camera as it is. So you have two options. First, I know that you can remove the grip. The company that sells them advertises that it is possible to remove it without harming the camera. What you do is pull a piece of dental floss between the grip and the camera. Then you will need to remove the sticky adhesive.

The other possibility may be this. Depending on the depth of the grip, you may be able to grind down one of the little plastic tabs in the housing to make room for the grip. I looked in my S90 housing, and there are two plastic tabs on the side where the grip would fit. It think the top tab might clear the grip. But if you have a little dremmel tool, you could probably carefully grind down the other one. But only if the depth of the grip is not too great.

Let me know what you end up doing. If you end up grinding down the case, I would be interested to know if it worked. I might want one of those grips myself.

Good luck. You will love the camera.

Raja Ampat Snorkeling
by: Gord

Hello Anni,

Sorry, but my post is not about your camera but rather is about your snorkeling location, Raja Ampat. I would very much appreciate it if you would post some kind of trip report on this web site once you return from your trip. Raja Ampat is somewhere my wife and I have been thinking about going to and I would love to hear from you regarding your experience. Thanks so much, and I hope you have a great trip!

Grip and Raja Ampat Snorkeling
by: Anonymous

Galen and Nicole,
Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I am so glad that you knew exactly what I was talking about. I still need to order the housing because I wasn't sure that it would work. I will order it right now as I will be taking off on June 15th. I think that I will remove the grip and hope that I can put it back on after returning home. Your Tropicalsnorking.com has been a wonderful help and a great find, thanks for providing this information.

Gord,

I will be happy to post some photos and info on this site when I return. Here are some good links to check out Raja Ampat info: http://www.wildernesstravel.com/trip/indonesia/raja-ampat-islands-snorkeling and http://www.shakti-raja-ampat.com/home.html and here are photos from a friend's Canon D10 who went last year: http://share.shutterfly.com/share/received/welcome.sfly?fid=67ddcfbc730f48846cbbd47cbb382743&sid=0AcOWjlw5ctWbkA. These are amazing pictures because this place is AMAZING!!!

Enjoy! Anni
