Calabash Caye, Turniff Is., Belize

by Greg Spartz
(Willmar, Minnesota)

Very nice to find a spot dedicated to snorkelers. We try to find new spots every year and have not been to Belize yet. We have found a beach home on Calabash Caye, but it is quite isolated with no boat. That is not a problem if the snorkeling is great and we can reach the reef w/o a boat. Do you know anything about this Caye on Turniff Atol? We also noted your comments about Glover's Reef and will be exploring that as well. Thank you. Greg and Connie

Snorkeling Calabash Caye, Turneffe Islands
by: Galen & Nicole

Hi Greg & Connie. Good questions, but unfortunately we don't have direct experience with the area of Turneffe that you are interested in. It is possible there may be some good snorkeling, and some of the websites I have seen about staying out on Calabash indicate there may be close reefs, but I think you will have to ask the people who you would be staying with for more detail.

Looking at our sailing guide for Belize, and the charts, we see that the Calabash Cayes are on the windward side of Turneffe, which may be good. You will have the cooling winds, and the inner reefs are generally healthier on that side of the Atols because of the constant flush of water. But short of a super calm day, you will not be able to snorkel outside the Turneffe Reef, because of prevalent winds and waves.

That is the adventure of finding new places though. Hopefully you will come back and share your experience here (and we would love to hear some of your past snorkeling stories and experiences also).
