Bonaire Snorkeling Review, April, 2011

by Jack
(New Mexico)

My wife and I returned to Bonaire after three trips to that island back in the 1980's and early 90's. We were there recently for two weeks.

The big change after 20 years? Many more divers and snorkelers! Klein Bonaire, which used to be hard to reach and deserted, now has water taxis and snorkel tour groups.

Also, as Nicole and Galen point out, recent storms have turned some areas that were lush with coral into rubble-strewn zones.

That said, Bonaire is still a fantastic place to snorkel. (Get Nicole and Galen's e-book. It's great. Used it religiously.) There are still many amazing spots to see beautiful coral, turtles and fish. We probably saw more turtles on this trip than in the old days. Didn't see as many big fish, but probably more variety.

Also a plus: Much better restaurants and hotels than 20 years ago. And the people of Bonaire are as friendly as ever.

When driving, be sure to watch out for the many wild donkeys and goats. And be sure to visit (and contribute to) the Donkey Sanctuary.

One suggestion: Use thick booties with flippers. Allows you to walk on the rough Bonaire "beaches" without having to deal with surf shoes.

Also, go to the national park but don't try to snorkel. The park itself is a full day.
