Big Island Snorkeling Guide Richardson's Ocean Park (Leleiwi Beach Park)
Generally, the Big Island snorkeling on the Hilo side of the island is not stellar. This is partly due to the amount of fresh water run off in this area. But this is definitely one of the better places that we have snorkeled on the rainy side of the island.

The name of this park area is Leleiwi Beach Park, and Richardson's Ocean Park is located at the very eastern end of Leleiwi.
Site Snorkeling Details - Richardson's Ocean Park (Leleiwi Beach Park) - Big Island Snorkeling
The good snorkeling is accessed through a trail that is to the right of the restrooms and the little police station. The trail leads between the buildings and the pond that is on the right. Head straight back until you see a little beach and a lifeguard station.

We entered the water through a small strip of sand. It tends to be a bit surgy here, but once in the water we snorkeled straight out and to the right. We did not leave the protection of the bay. The dark colored sand is interesting here. There are lots of fish, fairly interesting underwater topography in shallow water, and some coral. There tends to be some fresh water on the surface.
