Best Snorkeling Caribbean

by Fredric
(Merion, PA, USA)

We went to St. John last May and found the snorkeling very good, although perhaps less than excellent. This year, we are thinking of going somewhere else in the Caribbean to find hopefully excellent snorkeling. Although there are many great places accessible by boat, the ideal would be someplace with excellent snorkeling right off the beach. Does anyone have a place to recommend? Thanks a lot.

Hi Fredric,

We are going to Bonaire in a couple of months because it is suppose to be some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean. And it is almost all beach access. So look for our trip report soon on this site.

We just saw this article on Frommers about the best Caribbean snorkeling spots, which you may find useful.

And everyone we ask who has experience in the Caribbean keeps telling us about the amazing Virgin Gorda snorkeling.

Anybody else have Caribbean snorkeling experience?

Virgin Gorda

We went to the Virgin Islands a few years ago and it had a lot of pros and cons. The first few days we stayed on St. Thomas and snorkeling at Koki beach was great. You can feed the fish. The locals usually have dog biscuits they give (?) you, but giving a dollar or so back goes a long way towards making friends. They have loads of Sgt. Majors and some other kinds of fish scattered about, but the majors love the dog biscuits. You do have to keep a close eye on your equipment. I had a brand new prescription mask, snorkel and fins. I turned my back for literally a few minutes and it was gone. (I'd love to have seen the person that first looked through the prescription mask 8-)

Also, Koki world is right next to Koki beach. If you have time, go sea trekking. They put a huge helmet on you with air blowing in to keep the water out and send you down about 20 feet. You hold on to a chain and walk in a line on the trail. There are some interesting fish that show up there also. We saw grouper, beautiful coral, parrot fish, etc.

We also went to the British Virgin Isles and stayed on Tortola (nothing outstanding there), but The Baths on Virgin Gorda was amazing. Definitely go there. There are numorous huge boulders that lean on each other and almost make a cave. There's no describing it. The snorkeling right beside them is great and you can see a lot of fish while exploring the baths.

The ocean got cloudy the last few days. I had planned so carefully to be sure hurricane season was over and they had the first tropical storm in late Dec. since 1957. Oh, well, at least it came at the end of the trip and we got to experience one. Didn't really care for that part.

So, that's my take on the Virgin Islands. I do regret missing St. John but time and patience didn't allow it. The Islands weren't my favorite, but I only went to St. Thomas, Tortolla and Virgin Gorda. I'm just hooked on Hawaii. I'm going to attempt to upload a video and pictures of The Baths and Koki Beach.

Have fun.
