Best snorkel spots near Waikiki?

by Dan
(Minnesota)

I am looking for good snorkel spots in Oahu along bus routes from Wakiki other than Hanauma Bay for good swimmers to see unique fish and turtles. Please help.

Close Waikiki Snorkeling Spots
by: Galen & Nicole

Unfortunately the snorkeling close to Waikiki is not great. Fortunately Oahu has a great public bus transportation system, called The Bus, or Da Bus. For your purposes let's just call it the Snorkel Bus. You can get all over Oahu on the bus (although it may take you awhile).

So I would suggest you check out our main page about snorkeling Oahu,
find some of the snorkel spots you would most like to see, and then explore the Oahu bus schedule to see if you can get there and back.

The Oahu bus website has some useful links for bus routes to popular Oahu beaches here.

Also, when you get to Waikiki drop into one of the ABC stores (on every corner), and pick up a copy of "TheBus Map & Guide Book" for about $5. It will really help you figure how to get where you want to go.

The other option if you don't have a car is to take a snorkel boat trip from Waikiki. Although we have not done this, we have heard that the Outrigger Catamaran company that runs from the beach in front of the Outrigger Beach Hotel takes you to an OK snorkel spot.

But also keep in mind that car rentals in Hawaii are really some of the cheapest available. Why not spend $25 bucks, rent a car for a day, and hit a number of the best snorkel spots on the island?

I hope that helps.
