Avatar at Two Steps

by Ellen
(Sacramento, CA)

WOW, snorkeling Two Steps is amazing! Take the short street to the right just before you enter the parking lot for Place of Refuge (OR park in Place of Refuge for a small fee), walk out onto the lava rock to the right and you will see a step down, then another. It's pretty easy to sit there and put your flippers on, then away you go. It is like another world! Follow the reef to the right, the colors and abundant fish make it seem like you're in a 3D version of the movie Avatar. You can follow the reef a LONG ways around. There's some depth here, and waves will be rocking you a bit since it's an inlet, but there's some rather large coral formations throughout the site too. If you snorkel far enough around (I didn't), you'll spot the word "Aloha" on the bottom. Coming back up out of two steps, be careful not to place your fingers under the rocks as you hoist yourself up. Those sharp little urchins are all over under there, owie!!!! You will probably catch some outrigger racing as this is where the locals keep all their boats for races toward the end of the day.

Avatar is right!
by: Galen & Nicole

Ellen, we are so glad you enjoyed snorkeling Two Steps as much as we have. It is a wonderful place.

And you are so right. When we watched Avatar it was clear that James Cameron got many ideas from the underwater world, everything from the fields of giant Christmas Tree Worms, to the jellyfish like motions of the seeds of the sacred tree Eyra, and many other subtle things. Not surprising since he is an avid diver.

Big Island?
by: Krashzmom

Hi, Are you talking about the Big Island near Captain Cook's? If so, I'm so glad to hear that. We didn't snorkel there when we went to the Big Island before but next time...sounds like a must. I think we're going to try Kauai next time. We've never snorkeled there. We just came back from Maui and I'm already home sick to go back.

Two Steps
by: ChrisPr

We snorkeled Two Steps last month. It didn't have the most abundant, varieties or 'tameness' as Kahalu'u, but wasn't overcrowded, and unlike Kahalu'u, which is extremely shallow, had nice depth and ease of entry (considering it's rocky). We saw turtles, moray eel and a solid number of species. The 'aloha' message is towards the north as the reef drops off to a sandy bottom. Watch out for the urchins, as you should all along the Kona coast. This was my favorite snorkeling spot we went to on the Big Island and I recommend it.

Fantastic Fun @ Two Step Beach
by: Chris & Alli

We must have been lucky the first time we experienced Two Step because we shared the bay with a group of Spinner Dolphins.

As we arrived to the beach you could see them jumping in the middle of the bay. It probably goes without saying that it didn't take long for us to get into the water.

The closest I came to the dolphins was seeing them float just above the Aloha sign about 100ft down in perfectly clear water.

Alli my partner in crime really lucked out and was fortunate enough to have the dolphins come right up to her and jump.

Lucky duck, eh!!

We also swam with lots of sea turtles and a plethora of small colorful fish.

Would highly suggest wearing a pair of water shoes with good rubber sole as we found lots sea urchins.

Try explaining to your Inuit co-workers in Yellowknife, Canada how you need more time off right after your vacation to recover from the spines you picked up in your foot, too funny!

Safe n Happy Snorkeling!
